Renal Cyst

A Renal Cyst (pronounced: /ˈriːnəl/ /sɪst/) is a fluid-filled sac that develops in the kidney. They are usually benign (non-cancerous) and cause no symptoms, although in some cases they can lead to various complications.

Etymology

The term "Renal Cyst" is derived from the Latin word "Renalis" meaning "of the kidneys" and the Greek word "Kystis" meaning "bladder" or "sac".

Types of Renal Cysts

There are two main types of renal cysts:

  • Simple Renal Cysts: These are the most common type of renal cyst. They are usually harmless and often go unnoticed unless they grow large enough to cause discomfort or pain.
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease: This is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. These cysts can severely enlarge the kidneys and impair their function.

Symptoms

Most renal cysts cause no symptoms and are discovered during imaging tests performed for other reasons. However, if a cyst grows large enough, symptoms may include:

  • Pain in the side, back, or upper abdomen
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Frequent urination

Diagnosis

Renal cysts are typically diagnosed through imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. In some cases, a doctor may use a long needle to remove some of the fluid from the cyst for testing.

Treatment

Treatment for renal cysts depends on whether they are causing symptoms or complications. In many cases, no treatment is necessary. If a cyst is causing symptoms, treatment options may include:

  • Sclerotherapy: Also known as percutaneous alcohol ablation, this procedure involves inserting a long needle through the skin and into the cyst, then draining the fluid and filling the cyst with an alcohol-based solution to harden it and prevent it from reforming.
  • Surgery: In some cases, a large or symptomatic cyst may need to be surgically removed.
