Geographic Information System (GIS) is a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into visualizations using maps and 3D scenes.

Etymology: The term "Geographic Information System" is derived from the following words: "Geographic" comes from the Greek word "geographia" which means "description of the earth". "Information" is derived from the Latin word "informare" which means "to give form to the mind", and "System" comes from the Latin word "systema" which means "an organized scheme or method".
