Complement factor D

Complement Factor D (pronounced: kuhm-pleh-ment fak-tor dee) is a protein encoded by the CFD gene in humans. It is part of the Complement System, a part of the immune system that enhances the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microbes and damaged cells from an organism, promotes inflammation, and attacks the pathogen's cell membrane.

Etymology

The term "Complement" in Complement Factor D is derived from the fact that it complements the action of antibody in destroying bacteria. The "D" in Factor D is simply a designation in the series of complement proteins identified.

Function

Complement Factor D is a Serine Protease that stimulates the Alternative Pathway of the complement system. It cleaves Factor B when it is complexed with Factor C3b to form C3bBb, which is the C3 convertase of the alternative pathway.
