Colony stimulating factor 1 receptor
Colony Stimulating Factor 1 Receptor (CSF1R)
Colony Stimulating Factor 1 Receptor (pronounced as: kɒləni stɪmjʊleɪtɪŋ fæktər wʌn rɪsɛptər), also known as CSF1R, is a type of protein that in humans is encoded by the CSF1R gene.
Etymology
The term "Colony Stimulating Factor 1 Receptor" is derived from its function. "Colony Stimulating Factor" refers to the protein's role in stimulating the growth and differentiation of hematopoietic precursors into mature leukocytes. The "1 Receptor" indicates that it is the first identified receptor for this factor.
Function
CSF1R is a tyrosine-protein kinase that acts as a cell-surface receptor for CSF1 and interleukin 34 (IL34). It plays an essential role in the regulation of survival, proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic precursor cells, especially mononuclear phagocytes, such as macrophages and monocytes.
