BCRP - A protein involved in making cancer cells resistant (unable to respond) to anti-cancer drugs. Normally, BCRP works with other proteins to help transport many different substances, including drugs and other chemicals, in and out of cells. It is found in stem cells and in normal tissues including the gut, liver, brain and placenta. However, it can also be found in some cancer cells in higher than normal amounts, which can make them unable to respond to certain anticancer drugs. Drugs that block BCRP are being studied to treat some types of cancer. BCRP was first identified in breast cancer cells. Also called breast cancer resistance protein
