Algebra (pronounced: al-juh-bruh) is a branch of mathematics that deals with symbols and the rules for manipulating those symbols. The term "algebra" comes from the Arabic word "al-jabr" which means "reunion of broken parts".
Etymology
The word "algebra" is derived from the Arabic word "al-jabr", which was used in the title of a book written by the Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi in the 9th century. The full title of the book was "Kitab al-Jabr wa-l-Muqabala", which translates to "The Book of Restoration and Balancing". In this context, "restoration" refers to the operation of moving a subtracted quantity to the other side of an equation, and "balancing" refers to the operation of simplifying an equation by cancelling equal terms on both sides.
