A Content Management System (CMS) (pronounced: /ˈkɒntɛnt ˈmænɪdʒmənt ˈsɪstəm/) is a software application or set of related programs that are used to create and manage digital content.

Etymology

The term "Content Management System" is a compound noun made up of three words: "content", "management", and "system". The word "content" comes from the Latin contentus, meaning "contained", "management" is derived from the Italian maneggiare which means "to handle", and "system" comes from the Greek systēma, meaning "whole compounded of several parts or members".
