Hyderabad

Hyderabad (pronunciation: /ˈhaɪdərəbɑːd/ HY-dər-ə-baad) is a city located in the southern part of India. It is the capital of the Indian state of Telangana and de jure capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Etymology

The name Hyderabad means "Haydar's city" or "lion city", from haydar 'lion' and ābād 'city', after Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib, also known as Haydar because of his lion-like valour in battles. Ali was the fourth caliph and the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad.
