hemorrhagic stroke - (pronounced) (HEH-muh-RA-jik stroke) A type of stroke that occurs when a blood vessel in the brain or on the surface of the brain leaks or ruptures, causing bleeding in or around the brain caused around. This causes swelling and pressure that can damage cells and tissues in the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke is usually caused by high blood pressure, an aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, head injury, or a bleeding disorder. Also called hemorrhagic cerebrovascular accident
