Bones are made up of compact tissue (the hard, outer layer) and cancellous bone (the spongy, inner layer that contains red bone marrow). Bone tissue is maintained by bone-forming cells called osteoblasts and bone-breaking cells called osteoclasts. Bones also contain blood vessels, nerves, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
