iron overload - (pronounced) (I-urn OH-ver-lode) A condition in which the body absorbs and stores more iron than it needs. The extra iron gets stored in the liver, heart, and pancreas, which can lead to liver disease, heart problems, organ failure, and cancer. It can also cause bronze skin, diabetes, pain in the joints and abdomen, fatigue and impotence. Iron overload can be inherited or caused by blood transfusions. Also called hemochromatosis
