Abdominal breathing - (ab-DAH-mih-nul BREE thing) relaxation technique in which a person focuses on taking slow, deep breaths. Abdominal breathing involves slowly inhaling through the nose and then exhaling through the mouth using the diaphragm (the thin muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen) and abdominal muscles. This helps increase the amount of oxygen in the blood, lower blood pressure and heart rate, and reduce muscle tension. Abdominal breathing can be used to relieve stress, pain, and anxiety. Also called deep breathing and diaphragmatic breathing
