Hepatitis C virus - {{pronunciation}} (HEH-puh-TY-tis . . . VY-rus) A virus that causes hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). It is carried through the blood and other bodily fluids and passed on to others. Different ways of spreading the virus include sharing needles with an infected person and accidentally sticking them with a needle contaminated with the virus. Babies born to infected mothers can also contract the virus. Although patients infected with the hepatitis C virus may not have any symptoms, long-term infection can lead to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver cancer.
