ICD - A small device used to correct an abnormal heartbeat (too fast, too slow, or irregular). The device is surgically placed in the chest or abdomen. Wires are passed through a vein to connect the device to the heart. When it detects abnormal heartbeats, it sends an electric shock to the heart to restore the heartbeat to normal. Also called an implantable cardioverter defibrillator
